La Casa del Agua
The tiny aldea (hamlet) of Huelga Utrera nestles in the center of the largest protected area in Spain. In the heart of the natural park, sitting at the confluence of the Segura and Madera rivers, with an altitude of just over 1,000m, the aldea is dominated by stunning mountains that surround it on all sides.
The house has been lovingly restored without losing its rustic charm. The patio and orchard at the rear of the house give unbroken views down the valley and is a great location for spotting the local wildlife.
Water is the great theme of this area. The acequia (irrigation channel) that waters the orchards surrounding the aldea, runs past the front door of the house. The village is bordered on one side by the River Segura which, although inviting, remains chillingly cold year round. A short walk will take you to natural pools on the river Madera, ideal for a comfortable afternoon dip.
Both rivers are home to Brown Trout and you may well see tell tale signs of the elusive otter.
